Camp Hye Sierra, Dunlap, California
Camp Hye Sierra is a secluded, rustic camp in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, just seven miles from Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, 50 miles east of Fresno. It's equally accessible from the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and central California, with driving times of about four and a half hours.
Camp Hye Sierra is an old-fashioned group camping facility located on 160 acres at a 4,300-foot elevation. Days are warm but (usually) not sweltering. Nights are cool – bring blankets! – and the stars are amazing. You can rough it in your own tent, share a group cabin with bunk beds (12 to 16 beds per cabin but they are never completely full), or set up your camper/trailer. All cabins have electricity and are heated if necessary. Modern bathrooms are nearby with hot showers. For camping, you must bring all your own gear; mattresses are provided in the cabins but bring your own bedding.
There is a large open-air, shaded pavilion for classes with a sprung wooden dance floor. The pavilion is right next to the lake - jump in and have a swim after class! We also set up a second wooden, sprung dance floor on the other end of camp. The camp has a large dining hall with outdoor decks and eating areas. There is a bonfire area for nighttime activities – drumming, history, story-telling, and music. The camp's remote location means no neighbors and no curfew.
Camp Hye Sierra offers all the traditional outdoor activities. Hike when you need to be alone or clear your mind. Meditate by a still lake to start or end the day. At the swimming lake, you can rest on the warm, sunny beach, paddle a canoe, swim, or play volleyball. There is also a modern basketball court, which is well-lit – midnight basketball has become very popular with the artists and campers alike!
Let us know if you have any questions about the facilities. Please do not contact Camp Hye Sierra directly, as it is not their responsibility to answer your questions until you are on the premises. Also please be aware that pets are not permitted at Camp Hye Sierra.
